As long as we are in denial about the family dysfunction or abuse we endured, the longer it will take to heal. We are only as sick as our secrets. Asking your family about what happened in the past can be scary but it’s necessary.

If you want to avoid passing down the trauma and re-creating dysfunction in your life and your children’s lives you have to uncover the truth

I have dealt with low moods since childhood. I grew up in a middle-class family, a good neighborhood & an excellent school system. To the outside world, it looked like I had it good.

But I have felt sad, wishing for a quick exit from life despite things looking good on the outside. I know now that there was a LOT of family dysfunction going on before my parents got divorced.

Since I was only 3 when they split up I don’t have a lot of memories of strife or turmoil, but my nervous system has been on hyperdrive since then.

I grew up with a sense of not being good enough. I worked myself to exhaustion & burnout. And despite having a medical degree + being a licensed acupuncturist, I suffered with imposter syndrome.

I didn’t love myself, and I didn’t even know that or have words for that… until my patients reflected it back to me.

I ran an outpatient treatment program for binge eating disorder where many of my clients had a history of trauma in childhood, which led them to seek relief & control through dietary behaviors.

While I didn’t have an eating disorder, I tried to control my world through perfectionism. I tried to earn approval through achievements. And despite being at the height of my career, it didn’t feel fulfilling.

Over the course of the last 15 years I’ve unravelled the effects of childhood drama & reconnected to my Authentic Self & found my voice.

Unravelling the social & parental conditioning that led me to suffer with depression & anxiety set me free. 🙋🏽‍♀️ This is part of the accountability I’m talking about.
